Spiritual Adventures
BASQUE SPAIN
A mouth-watering and soul-nourishing adventure through Spanish Jewish memory, old and new.
Basque Country unfolds along a picturesque landscape hugging the French-Spanish border just west of the Pyrennes with a stunning Atlantic coastline. It distinguishes itself through its language, history, food, wine, villages, and art.
While some trace Jewish presence in Spain to as far back as the Bible itself, in the Basque region our stories mostly begin with the expulsions of 1492 when Jews fled Spain and Portugal to the northern part of the country and to France. There are echoes of our presence everywhere.
There are the more common vestiges in the form of cemeteries, street signs and synagogue buildings. But then there are lesser-known ones that continue to bring shape and flavor to this unique territory: leather goods, chocolate, bacalao recipes, hiking trails used by Conversos as they fled persecution, and more.
There are even echoes in our own contemporary Jewish lives. Wait until you hear the Basque notes in one of modern Judaism’s most iconic melodies.
Basque Country animates a timeless Jewish dialogue between our own culture and the cultures we call -or once called - home. And what does home mean if it’s not a destination of choice but rather of force?
Join us for a hands-on, mouth-watering and soul-nourishing adventure exploring, learning, reflecting, eating, and drinking our way through memories old and new.
